Live Encoding for Radio and TV

An increasing number of broadcast stations are using the Internet to broadcast their programmes live. We currently realise more than 250 radio streams and over 35 television streams in 24x7 operation. And increasingly more viewers and listeners are taking advantage of this offer – also because Internet access is becoming increasingly faster and more affordable at the same time. Users only need a computer with an Internet connection to receive the streams. They can listen to radio at the office or watch German television abroad, where they have no terrestrial or satellite reception.

To ensure operational reliability, we receive the programmes redundantly through different aerials. Thus, we can ensure the smooth broadcasting of your live streams, even during severe weather. Tandberg satellite receivers guarantee that we can process the received signals in optimum quality at any time. Thanks to permanent monitoring, your signals are automatically redirected using a L-band redundancy switch in case faults occur with the aerials or receivers. We route the AV signals using two cross bars that are each connected to one or if required, several encoders.

The signal routing can be controlled using a web interface or via web service (e.g. XML-RPC), thus allowing you to switch to alternative signals ad-hoc or at specific times and providing you with flexibility when configuring your live streams. We can also control live streams of television shows using the VPS signal. Therefore, the broadcast starts and stops at precisely the right time, even if the show has been delayed. We also detect the aspect ratio of the TV picture and can automatically code it in 4:3 or 16:9 using WSS detection. Of course, we can also process programmes on location, which cannot be received via satellite or by IP data stream through the public Internet.

The encoding is performed in optimum quality in any format, thanks to the continuous digital signal path. Furthermore, our encoding software can automatically integrate the most diverse metadata and additional information from editorial offices – an important service for your users.
