WDR: CuteCafé recording system

Background: CuteCafé is a recording system that we developed for WDR. It allows the editors to easily edit out sections from programmes and have the downstream programmes transcoded in any desired streaming format. We can realise a workflow with no time delay by using QuickTime reference movies.

The task: Various functions are to be added to the programme, which has been used for many years. This will allow several sections to be combined into a new sequence. Editors can then easily edit the sequence of the clips and select various screens provided for transitions between clips.

Our solution: We added various editing functions along with fade-ins and fade-outs to the CuteCafé recording system. In addition, the sequence to be created is now presented in graphs on a storyboard, which makes it very easy to use. We continuously record the television signals and store them for 48 hours. Using QuickTime reference movie allows editing during recording. No intermediate formats must be rendered, which significantly saves time during editing. The sequences are automatically and directly transmitted to transcoding software for generating streams. Time is also saved in this step, since no time-consuming data export is required.

Overview of our services:
• Continuous recording of two television signals in short blocks,
• Content storage for 48 hours,
• Development of an easy to use editing programme for the montage, including fade-ins and fade-outs,
• Transmission to transcoding software with no time-consuming export.
